What looks good, sells good! Even before you sample a product, you touch and feel its packaging. In fact, it is the package design that makes one product look different from the other. A graphic designer makes a product visually appealing. So, a good design can always help brands catch a consumer’s attention.
As markets get saturated with goods and products, the competition to catch a consumer’s eyes has intensified. A designer can help create product packaging with a distinctive appeal.
The demand for graphic designers is very high in India and it is only set to go up in the future. Graphic designing is like bread and butter for any company. “At least 40 % of communications that a company does with its customers is visual. Every product first needs to sell visually first before a buyer picks it up. Almost every business including media houses, publishing firms, FMCG, retail, software sector need good graphic designers,” says Vishal Goyal, a Delhi based graphic designer.
Clients brief the graphic designers on the kind of market the product is being created for. Based on the discussion, the designer does some research before working on the creatives.
“We need to study the purchasing habits of the target group and the packaging design of the probable competitors of the product we have been hired to design. Based on this basic research, we need to improve the design of the product and make it look better than the packaging of the existing products in the market to be able to attract the target group of the competitor,” says Goyal.
Colour is the major distinguishing factor of a product followed by the fonts and the layout of the design. One is free to experiment with the design.
The biggest challenge for graphic designers is to understand what a client is looking for and designing what he/she wants. “One should research the product well, find out more about the competition and the preferences of the target group for the product,” says Goyal.
